These feeding guidelines are suggestions only; ideal feeding amounts may vary by breed, age, activity level, temperature, genetics and other factors. Small dogs often require more food during the winter than during the summer.

Remember to consider treats and other foods your dog or cat may eat when using these guidelines.

Please keep your dogs and cats lean. Lean dogs and cats live longer, healthier lives.

For normal weight pets
If you're not sure how much to feed, choose a low activity level and feed the suggested amount. If your dog or cat loses weight on that amount, increase the amount fed.

For overweight pets
Choose the lowest activity level for your dog's proper weight. Do not let your pet lose more than 1% of her body weight per week. Increase food when your pet is at her proper weight.

Dogs that work
--agility, hunting, herding, obedience -- often require more food.
