More Pet Food Recalls
On Monday, April 16, 2007, Natural Balance announced a voluntary recall of several of its Venison Formulas in which they found the chemical melamine in the product's rice (gluten) protein concentrate. This rice gluten also originated in China from a company called Binzhou Putian Biology Technology. The importer, Wilbur-Ellis, said it sold the ingredient to five different pet food companies, including Diamond Pet Food Company where products such as Natural Balance are made. On Tuesday, Menu also added an additional dog food called Natural Life to the recall list. Exact product names and batch codes can be found at www.menufoods.com and www.fda.gov.
Nature's Logic Products are in no way affected by any past or present recalls. All recalls have been associated with very highly processed protein concentrate products such as wheat and rice gluten. It is suspected that these two adultered sources of ingredients may have had the synthetic protein melamine added by their Chinese producers in order to meet required protein specifications by exporters and importers purchasing such ingredients. The FDA and many nutritionists and laboratory experts we have talked to said this added synthetic protein would never have been detected or suspected in an ingredient such as wheat or rice gluten by any good manufacturing and testing protocols. The adulteration of these gluten products with melanine would be similar to adding synthetic urea nitrogen (protein) to cattle feeds. The difference is that a ruminant can tolerate and utilize some urea but would be toxic to mammals just like melamine associated with the recalls.
Nature's Logic Products never include any synthetic materials such as highly processed wheat or rice gluten protein concentrates. Nature's Logic only uses all natural whole foods containing natural vitamins and minerals and proteins.
Nature's Logic would like to stress that this is not a problem with USA manufacturers, but is an adulterated ingredient supply problem that is affecting supplies of these two AAFCO approved ingredients worldwide. We believe the manufacturing protocols of facilities in the USA are some of the best in the world and that industry and government will sooner or later be able to shed light on the criminal acts of the suppliers of these most likely and purposely contaminated ingredients.
Initial Recall Information Posted 3/21/2007
Since the March 16, 2007 announced recall of over 50 brands of canned pet food made by Menu Foods, we have received a number of calls and emails from concerned Nature's Logic customers and stores.
Nature's Logic canned diets are not a part of this recall. This initial recall was for the "cuts and gravy style" product in pouches and cans. The brand names made at Menu Foods involved in the recall can be found at www.menufoods.com.
Recently, the recall has been extended to some additional brands of canned food and a few dry food formulas. All updates about additional product recalls can be found at www.fda.gov. Additionally, Nature's Logic dry diets are not a part of this recall.
The common ingredient with all the canned, pouched, and dry recalled products is a source of wheat gluten imported by ChemNutra from the Chinese company Xuzhou Anying.
Nature's Logic uses no wheat gluten and also uses no synthetic supplementation which can be a source of heavy metal contamination according to AAFCO. All Nature's Logic canned and dry foods are made with 100% whole food (real meat or poultry plus concentrates of human edible fruit and vegetable concentrates, egg, various seeds, and fish oil).
Nature's Logic goes to great lengths in purchasing high quality, safe ingredients for making its products. Additionally, Nature's Logic had in mind the health and safety of our pets when it launched the only 100% all natural line of products that includes no chemically synthesized vitamins or minerals. All nutrients in Nature's Logic products come from whole foods. We never use man-made sources of supplements which are known to have toxic levels.
Nature's Logic extends its sincere heart felt sympathy to all pets and their caretakers that have been affected by this unfortunate situation.
