05/01/2007 Melamine added to pet food for years
The New York Times News Service and the Associated Press have both reported that producers of animal feed all over China have secretly added melamine for years. Some select quotes from Chinese manufactures include:
"Many companies buy melamine scrap to make animal feed, such as fish feed," said Ji Denghui, general manager of the Fujian Sanming Dinghui Chemical Co., which sells melamine. "I don't know if there's a regulation on it. Probably not. No law or regulation says 'don't do it,' so everyone's doing it. The laws in China are like that, aren't they? If there's no accident, there won't be any regulation."
"Using the proper quantity of melamine will not harm the animals," said Wang Jianhui, manager of the Kaiyuan Protein Feed Company in the northern city of Shijiazhuang. "Our products are very safe, for sure," Wang added.
"We've been running the melamine feed business for about 15 years and receiving positive responses from our customers," Wang told The Associated Press.
Ji Denghui, manager of Sanming Dinghui Chemical Trading Co. in the eastern province of Fujian, said animal food companies are some of his best customers.
"A lot of animal food companies buy melamine from us to add in the animal feed," Ji said. "This can lower the production cost and increase nitrogen levels." Links to the Chicago Tribune articles containing these quotes.

At least the FDA is starting to crack down on some Chinese food imports.
