Weight Loss in Obese Dogs: High Protein - Low Carb Diets
Nature’s Logic has always recommended and encouraged customers with obese pets to feed our high animal protein, low carb diets, rather than so called reducing diets. When feeding in the right amount, Nature’s Logic will aid in weight reduction while retaining lean body mass.
“In a recent study¹, an experimental high animal protein test diet was tested in feeding trials on grossly obese pets along side a control diet which was a commercial prescription reducing diet. In the test report, it stated “traditionally, high-fiber low-energy diets have been promoted for weight management. The content of total digestible fibers in those diets typically range from 20 to 40% on a dry matter basis, as in the two diets used in this study. Dietary fibers are used to dilute energy density of the food and to provide a feeling of satiety by causing gastric distension. This latter effect remains controversial in dogs. A concern with feeding weight-reduction diets is that reduced energy intake is associated with suboptimal intake of essential nutrients, especially protein. Feeding a high-protein diet in obese dogs resulted in a better conservation of lean body mass.”

Note: Using Nature’s Logic as a weight reduction diet will provide the high-protein that resulted in a better conservation of lean body mass as in the above study, but at the same time will not include the controversial high-fiber which causes gastric distension. Dogs on Nature's Logic will retain muscle mass as it loses excess fat, and will be provided the essential nutrients required for maintaining good health.
